Learning Target: I will understand what a dichotomous key is and how to use it to identify a living thing Assignments: 1) Using Fist to Five identify your current knowledge of dichotomous keys. 2) Video clips: "Classification" and "Dichotomous Keys" 3) Read introduction to Dichotomous Keys (yellow handout) and write the definition of the term in your SNB below the target for today. 4) Answer questions 1-3 on the yellow sheet. Tape this sheet in your SNB. 5) Obtain a "Bag of Frogs" from your teacher. Use the dichotomous key to identify each frog in the bag label "A-F" or "G-L". When you have identified each frog check with the teachers' answer key. 6) Read about identification keys in the Sciencesaurus, page 164. Identify the genus and species name for each whale pictured in the two columns. Write your answers in your SNB in two columns that match the order of the pictures of the whales. Homework: Study frog dissection notes and frog life cycle diagram for the frog quiz tomorrow. You will need to be able to answer questions about the dissection and be able to identify the major organs of the frog.
