My first time Tardigrade hunting this summer. Tardigrades are also known as "water bears" and are a group of very tiny but highly specialized animals. The majority are between 0.3 to 0.5 mm. They can live in a variety of habitats, but many live in the water that surrounds the leaves of mosses and lichens, especially those that grow on trees. I was very fortunate to capture this pink fellow extending his claw out during a swim. Notice the claws on its hands. They have four pairs of legs. At the end of each leg are hook-like claws. He looks like he is giving me a high-five. I hope to find more Tardigrades soon.
